POLL WORKERS NEEDED 

The Somerset County Election Board is hiring voters to serve as poll workers for the upcoming Primary and General Elections in 2021.  H.S. students welcome to apply!

Training is provided prior to every Election (online training now available) and poll workers are paid $200 per Election.

The Primary Elections - June 8, 2021

primary election is an election in which registered voters select an individual that they believe should be the political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. 

HOW MANY SIGNATURES ARE REQUIRED TO RUN FOR TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE?

  • Democratic Primary Election - 50 Signatures (Due April 5th by 4:00pm)
  • Republican Primary Election - 50 Signatures (Due April 5th by 4:00pm) 
  • Independents Running in General Election - 100 Signatures (Due June 8th by 4:00pm to the County Clerk) 

WHERE CAN I FIND ELECTION PETITIONS? (needed to run for political positions)

HOW DO PRIMARIES WORK IN NEW JERSEY? 

New Jersey utilizes a semi-closed primary process, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is generally limited to registered party members. Unaffiliated voters can register as party members at the polls on primary election day. Otherwise, a voter must indicate his or her party preference (e.g., via an updated voter registration) no later than the 55th day preceding the primary in order to vote in that party's primary.

WHO MAY REGISTER TO VOTE? You are eliglbe to register to vote if:

  • You are a citizen of the United States
  • You are a resident of Somerset County at least 30 days before the next election
  • You will be 18 years of age on or before the next election
  • You are not incarcareted, on parole, or on probation

No, only if you wish to declare a party affiliation.

Registered voters who have moved to another town within Somerset County must update their voter registration with a change of address. Registered voters who are new to Somerset County or move out of the county must file a new voter registration application.

Search the New Jersey Divison of Elections Voter Registration records to confirm if you are registered.
