Many New Jersey Counties have been collecting household batteries for recycling and proper disposal since the early 1990s. Due to changes in the composition of batteries and new regulations, for most counties, this practice has now changed. Visit https://www.co.somerset.nj.us/government/public-works/recycling/battery-disposal for more information.
Bulky items are accepted at the Township's Pill Hill Recycling Center. Permit cards will have credits deducted as per the current schedule. Examples of bulky household waste are furniture, carpeting & padding, construction debris (other than recyclables and those listed as not accepted), mattresses, attic clean-out, appliances, etc.
As the owner, operator or manager of a business/commercial establishment you must ensure that a recycling system is in place. That system needs to provide for the separation of mandatory recyclable items and for the proper recycling of those materials. You, not your trash hauler, are responsible for separating mandatory materials and keeping them out of any refuse containers holding non-recyclable items.
Visit https://www.co.somerset.nj.us/government/public-works/recycling/business-recycling for more information.

Over-the-counter and prescription medications should not be disposed of down the drain. Wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove pharmaceutical compounds and they may end up in your local waterways, and may eventually be found in drinking water. Properly disposing of unwanted and expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications promotes a healthy aquatic environment and prevents accidental poisoning and intentional abuse.
For information on proper disposal of medication and home generated medical waste visit https://www.co.somerset.nj.us/government/public-works/recycling/home-medical-waste.
For the convenience of residents, a 24/7 medicine drop-box is located at the Bernards Township Police Department, 1 Collyer Lane, Basking Ridge.
Did you know that an average of two gallons of household paint is sold for each person in the United States each year? Often this paint is disposed of improperly, which can harm the environment. There are several ways to manage leftover paint in Somerset County that are environmentally safe.

Somerset County does not collect polystyrene materials because they are difficult to collect and store due to its bulk. Leaves, brush and other yard trimmings [excluding grass clippings] will be accepted at the Township's Pill Hill Recycling Center. The permit card will not have credits used for these visits; however, displaying the permit card will speed your trip and help eliminate delays for all users.
Leaves may be brought in any type of container. All containers must be emptied and taken back by the resident. No other materials may be mixed in with the leaves.
To be accepted, wood waste must be in a form that can be chipped. Small brush and twigs must be tied in bundles. Bundles or individual pieces should be no more than twelve inches in diameter. Lengths of three to four feet are best. No stumps, roots or foreign matter such as nails or dirt will be accepted. Wood scrap such as unfinished lumber (non-chemically treated, not painted, no metal or nails, no plywood or laminated pieces) will also be accepted, if chippable.
Unfortunately due to a multitude of unlabeled hazardous household waste that have been deposited in the waste oil container at 277 S Maple Ave., the drop off procedure required modification.
We recommend that residents utilize Somerset County for any and all Household Hazardous Waste disposal at the designated drop offs throughout the year. https://www.co.somerset.nj.us/government/public-works/recycling/hazardous-waste-days
